Green Strategies for
Building Design

ARC 60804

The Green Strategies for Building Design module significantly improved my understanding of sustainable architecture through a well-organized learning process. Beginning with comparative case studies (Project 1), I developed a foundational knowledge of various sustainable practices in different contexts, emphasizing the value of teamwork and collaborative analysis. The AICB Building site visit (Project 2) provided practical exposure to real-world applications of these strategies, deepening my understanding. In the final assignment, I applied green strategies to my architectural design project, focusing on passive design elements such as daylighting, landscaping, site planning, and natural ventilation. This module effectively combined theory with practical experience, equipping me to integrate sustainability into my future architectural work.

Project Outcome

Project 1;  Passive Green Building Case Studies Poster & Booklet

In our group of 5-6 members, we will select two architectural case studies demonstrating passive sustainable design strategies: one from a tropical climate and another from a different climate (Arid, Mediterranean, Temperate Continental, or Polar). We will compare their approaches to site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, strategic landscaping, and other active green design strategies. Additionally, we will analyze how these passive strategies impact the spatial quality and experience of each project. Our final deliverables include an A2 infographic poster and an A4 booklet (20-25 pages) featuring our comprehensive findings.

Reflecting on the case study project, I’m really pleased with how our group collaborated to analyze and compare passive sustainable design strategies across different climatic contexts. We explored diverse approaches to site planning, daylighting, façade design, and other green strategies, which deepened our understanding of their impact on spatial quality and experience. This project not only enhanced our knowledge of sustainable design but also emphasized the value of teamwork in addressing complex architectural challenges. Overall, it was a rewarding experience that highlighted the significance of integrating sustainability into architectural practices.

Project 2; Passive Green Building Strategies Report

In this project, I will need to develop and document passive and active green building strategies alongside my final architectural studio project, with guidance from online tutorials with my assigned tutor. My strategies will incorporate insights from the tropical case study in Assignment 1, including site planning, daylighting, façade design, natural ventilation, landscaping, and renewable energy where applicable. The process and final proposal will be compiled into an A3 report in PDF format.

Reflective write up on the AICB Outcome
Passive Green Building Strategies Report Outcome

Reflecting on this project, I learned the importance of integrating passive and active green strategies into design. Applying concepts like site planning, natural ventilation, and landscaping from the tropical case study deepened my understanding of sustainable design. This experience highlighted how sustainability and architecture must work hand in hand for effective, functional designs.
